What are YOU interested in discussing?

Let’s get the dialogue going before MLK Weekend!

We encourage you to speak up in the comment section and let everybody know what you’re most excited about… What issues do you want to explore with others who live and/or work in our nation’s capital? What projects are you looking forward to sharing with everyone? What conversations are you most interested in having?

(Just in case you are allergic to leaving comments, we have also set up a public notepad where you can say what you want to learn/talk about.)

I would love to be a part of a session that discusses an interfaith response to injustices in this city exploring how houses of worship can collaborate across faiths and denominations to host impactful, effective and transformational ministries/services. I am particularly interested in how the faith community can meet real community needs, not duplicate services, and find ways to provide not just basic needs but also create long-term solutions.

  2. Tessa Moran says:

I would like to discuss the way documentary film can be used to educate, inform and inspire the public. As a filmmaker, I would like to hear from non-profits about how my work can serve their mission.

  3. I’m interested in establishing centralized online collaboration, especially information sharing through listservs, blogs, and forums. There appears to be a major disconnect in centralizing information which is doing a huge disservice to the city.

I am interested in how social media and the Internet are empowering individuals to get things done outside of conventional organizational structures and methodologies. I am also extremeley interested in how folks are using the arts and technology to build and maintain community in DC.

Tessa Moran, Jenn, and Rochelle’s ideas above are awesome! Very much looking forward to talking to these folks. Whoever is helping plan this thing must have superpowers :)

I’d like to second ninjaclectic’s suggestion. I am interested in some social network strategy sharing. What techniques are others using to maximize their presences on the networks? In particular, I’d love to receive a Twitter tutorial. Though I understand the very basics, I’d like to be able to use Twitter to its full potential.

My hope is to connect with activists and organizers who’d like explore the ways that community-based theater can further their activities. Theater isn’t the first thing most organizers think of when they start talking strategy; I’d like to share/demonstrate some powerful reasons why it should be (at least) in the top 5. Then, I’d like to get nice and quiet and listen to what the needs, observations, and inspirations are from others working for social change and brainstorm ways that we can help each other.

I want to hear people who are experts in the areas of poverty, hunger, homelessness and social justice share their wisdom. I want to be in the middle of a swarm of knowledge. I want to tell people about my friend’s after school program in Houston & how the kids in that program improve their reading level by two grades in one year. I want to tell people about the shelter in Dallas that opened two years ago, designed to serve 300 people per night but adapted when the demand was greater than expected & regularly let in 800 people per night. I want to be a part of a discussion where people with different experiences see what they can learn from each other.

  8. I’d like to hear about creative ways people have invented to deal with all the political BS that gets in the way of accomplishing social justice in DC. I think *those* people have superpowers.

  9. Chris Golden says:

I’m interested in connecting with ninjadectic and Whitney this weekend because I too am very interested in the promise & potential of social media to advance our causes and organizations. I was thinking about volunteering to lead a discussion on how social media is changing models of engagement, especially for young people. It is something that I do a lot of work on in my work- in the volunteering & service field. I’m really looking forward to this weekend!
